It is no secret that jobs within the medical field are continuing to grow. As such, those who are looking for a job that offers a great deal of job stability are particularly interested in finding a job within the health field. If you are one of these people, you might want to seriously consider pursuing a job as a surgical technician. Not only do surgical technicians enjoy the same job stability as many other careers within the health industry, they also make an attractive income and the training that is necessary to become a surgical technician can be completed in two years or less. But, what exactly does a surgical technician do and what can you expect from your surgical technician job description after you land a job?
The exact duties that are included within the surgical technician job description will vary slightly depending upon where you work and what type of surgical technician position you take on. In general, however, the surgical technician job description will be pretty much the same regardless of where you are employed. Some of the duties that are typically included in the surgical technician job description include:
Assemble sterile and nonsterile equipment and make sure it is functioning properly prior to surgery
Set up sterile drapes, sterile solutions and surgical instruments and equipment before the surgery takes place
Prep patients for surgery by washing, shaving and disinfecting the area
Transporting patients to the operating room
Positioning patients onto the operating table
Covering patients with sterile surgical drapes
Pass instruments and other supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants
Cut sutures and hold retractors during surgery
Assist with counting needles, sponges, instruments and supplies
Prepare and dispose of specimens that are to be taken to the lab for analysis
In some cases, the surgical technician job description may also include operating lights, suction machines, diagnostic equipment and sterilizers.
If you decide to become a certified surgical technologist and to complete additional specialized training, you might also become a surgical first assistant or a circulator. As a surgical first assistant, your surgical technician job description will also include controlling the blood flow of the patient and preventing hemorrhage from occurring. As a circulator, on the other hand, your surgical technician job description will include assisting with anesthesia, obtaining and opening packages during the procedure, maintaining a written account of the procedure and answering any questions that the surgeon may have during the procedure.
Obviously, your surgical technician job description may vary slightly depending upon the type of setting in which you work as well. If you work at a specialty treatment center, for example, the duties that you are called upon to perform may vary from those that would be required of someone who works in a physician''s office or in a dentist''s office. Therefore, you should be sure to read the surgical technician job description thoroughly before you decide whether or not a particular job is right for you.
